Are you looking for your next RVing adventure in Ontario? Allow us to suggest Manitoulin Island, the world's largest freshwater island, nestled amidst the pristine waters of Lake Huron. Nature enthusiasts will be thrilled with the islands numerous lakes, extensive hiking trails, and breathtaking scenery. Manitoulin Island, with its quiet roads, stunning views, and minimal traffic (just one traffic light on the island), is the perfect RV destination for those seeking an unforgettable experience.
Manitoulin Island has been on our bucket list for a long time. When it came time to plan our RV adventure in Northern Ontario, we knew that visiting the island was a must-do experience If you're planning to visit, it's important to note that since this is an island, there are some challenges when it comes to getting here. However, whether you're from the south or north, your journey will be worth it.
Option number one and the one that worked for us: From the north, Manitoulin Island can be accessed through the Little Current Swing Bridge, which is one of the few swing bridges in Canada. The bridge links the island to the mainland via Highway 6.
Option number two: From the south, you can take the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry from Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsula to South Baymouth on Manitoulin Island between May and October. The ferry ride lasts approximately 2 hours and offers an exciting experience as you travel across the beautiful waters of Georgian Bay. We highly recommend making reservations in advance.
Wish we had more time
While more time is always better, our three-day visit did not disappoint. Let's dive into some of the highlights from our time on this mesmerizing island.
First stop, welcome to the island - Little Current, the bustling hub of Manitoulin Island, offers a delightful array of local shops and restaurants. We treated ourselves to a delicious lunch on the patio of Anchor Inn and took strolls along the picturesque waterfront.
Providence Bay Tent and Trailer Park, where we stayed- with its convenient beach access and essential amenities- served as the perfect home base for our island exploration.
Providence Bay Beach, one of Ontario's finest, greeted us with its pristine sandy shores and crystal-clear blue waters.
In Providence Bay, we savoured mouthwatering fish and chips at Huron Fish & Chips, indulged in aromatic coffee and delectable sweets at Providence Peace Cafe, perused the charming souvenirs at Mutchmore, and enjoyed live music at the Harbour Center.
The community of Kagawong is a hidden gem where you can revel in the abundance of fresh produce and exquisite handmade crafts. Our sweet tooth led us to Manitoulin Chocolate and Boobahloo Candy, where we indulged in delectable treats while exploring the charming shops and galleries.
Bridal Veil Falls, an awe-inspiring 11-meter high cascade, is an absolute must-visit. Walking behind the curtain of rushing water and taking a dip in the natural pool at the falls' base was an unforgettable experience.
For beer enthusiasts, Manitoulin Brewery and Split Rail Brewery offer delightful tastings and a fun atmosphere.
Ten Mile Point Trading Post is a haven for those seeking unique local souvenirs and captivating artwork. We took our time exploring this beautiful establishment and couldn't resist taking a piece of Manitoulin Island home with us.
